Become an advocate for Heart Disease.

In loving memory of my parents: log onto www.americanheart.org

Dear Mrs. Linz and Family:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for physical education classes. I appreciate hearing from you.

I agree that physical education should be part of school curriculum. America's children are experiencing obesity in growing numbers and data continues to highlight the link between obesity and diabetes, heart disease, and other life-threatening medical conditions. Physical fitness both improves overall health and is linked to improved self-esteem and performance on standardized tests.

I am a strong supporter of the Carol White Physical Education Program at the Department of Education, which provides grants to schools to develop physical education curriculum. It is helping fuel a renewal in physical education around the country. I have urged my colleagues on the Appropriations committee to continue funding this important program.

The Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (H.R. 3257) would require all public schools to report on quantity and quality of physical education. It would also ensure that children get the information and support they need throughout their education to help them live a health life. I will support this bill when it comes up for a vote in Congress.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, and please do not hesitate to let me know whenever I may be of service.

Sincerely,
Chris Van Hollen
Member of Congress
